Fun fact: Did you know that there are over 44 open-air markets, 28 indoor market, and almost 100 night markets in Kuala Lumpur?

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz announced that an estimated of RM16 million has been allocated this year for various upgrading and maintenance works on the city’s markets.

“We cannot plan too far ahead as it is beyond our capacity and we have limited resources to handle such big projects. We have to prioritise and many of the upgrading works are done in phases,” said the mayor.

Currently, Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) ongoing projects include moving Pasar Imbi (Bukit Bintang market) to the 7-storey Pudu Integrated Commercial Complex (ICC) in Jalan Kijang within this month and building a new indoor facility for Pasar Jalan Raja Bot (Chow Kit market) by 2020.

Upcoming projects will also include upgrading Pasar Pudu, Selayang daily market, Pasar Pekan Sungai Besi, and Pasar Jalan Ikan Emas, but not all of them are happy with the facelift.

The plan for Pasar Pudu for instance, is to build a 2-storey building to fit all 1,500 vendors. Pasar Pudu Traders Association chairman Jeff Tan Ker Chiang said, “We are happy with an upgrade but most importantly DBKL must think of our situation. The market has become a semi-wholesale market so we need a place to store our goods, but that will be difficult if we are moved indoors.”

Take a look at DBKL’s plans below:

Don’t let the marketing culture die down! Thumbs up to our City Hall’s efforts to ensure that our markets are well-maintained and are in good condition 🙂
