The new year brings new changes – but are all changes welcomed? Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) recently announced they’re ditching the iconic sarong kebaya uniforms for their ground staff, replacing them with a more modern look.

The new AeroDarat Services (ADS) uniform, which now features a songket design rather than the previous batik, comprises a tailored three-piece suit with both skirt and trouser options for women. The airline says the intricate songket design and a blazer silhouette “harmoniously blends the country’s rich cultural heritage with the uniform’s contemporary flair”.

The carrier said the move to renew the uniforms’ design is a significant step in embracing modernity while maintaining tribute to Malaysia’s cultural roots. With the new uniforms, the airline hopes it will provide more comfort and convenience for the ground staff while pleasing the conservative passengers who have voiced requests for the airline to be more considerate of Malaysia’s Islamic values.

Netizens have since commented on the new uniforms, sharing mixed reactions to the ground staff’s new look. Many have noted that the new uniforms are better as they are more conservative, which suits the country’s traditional values. However, some lamented that the new uniforms seemed bland compared to the previous sarong kebaya uniforms. Several commented that the new uniforms are reminiscent of a hotel staff or restaurant server, adding that the airline should have maintained the previous pattern but altered the design if they wanted a conservative look.

For now, it seems the new uniform is only for ground staff since there is no mention of a new design for the cabin crew. But what do you think about the new uniforms? Do you think these are better suited for the airline? Or do you prefer the sarong kebaya look?
