This is not a drill. We repeat, this is not a drill!

According to THR, popular 80s TV series MacGyver will be making a comeback. Oh you know the one, with the dude who is capable of defusing a bomb with a fork. Or something to that effect 😉

But in just case all the wonderfulness that is MacGyver happened before your time, here’s a little introduction.

MacGyver is an American action-adventure TV series created by Lee David Zlotoff, which ran for 7 seasons on ABC in the US and various other networks abroad from 1985 to 1992. The show follows secret agent Angus MacGyver (played by Richard Dean Anderson) who works as a troubleshooter for the fictional Phoenix Foundation in Los Angeles and as an agent for a fictional United States government agency, the Department of External Services (DXS).

Educated as a scientist, MacGyver served as a Bomb Team Technician/EOD during the Vietnam War (“Countdown”). Resourceful and possessed of an encyclopedic knowledge of the physical sciences, he solves complex problems by making things out of ordinary objects, along with his ever-present Swiss Army knife. He prefers non-violent resolutions and prefers not to handle a gun.

Now, based on the Richard Dean Anderson starrer that ran for 7 seasons on ABC, CBS’ take is described as a reimagining of the TV series of the same name, following a 20-something MacGyver as he gets recruited into a clandestine organization where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters from happening.

This means that unlike its predecessor, this new MacGyver is set to court a younger audience as the lead will be 10 years younger than the original. So you should be prepared to not see a replica of the series that aired way back.

And who’s going to be working on it, you ask? None other than Malaysian-born filmmaker James Wan.

James Wan

Known for his work in numerous films such as “Saw” (2004), “Insidious” (2010), “The Conjuring” (2013), and more recently “Furious 7” (2015), James is set to executive produce the series, and he’s on board to develop what’s sure to be an explosive pilot episode.

Don’t be too surprised that he’s taking this new series on because this isn’t the first time that he has been attached to MacGyver. In 2012, he was tied to a MacGyver movie that never happened because he had to drop it to work on “Furious 7”.

We can’t wait to see what James will cook up for the new MacGyver!
