Datuk Lee Chong Wei (李宗伟) has retired from being a badminton legend on court. However, he is yet to be forgotten, both by avid badminton fans and Malaysians. Of course, it helps that he keeps up his online presence by being very active on his socials.
Recently, the ever-generous Datuk made waves again. His last note-worthy interaction was when he comforted singer Joey Yung. This time, he apparently gifted Singaporean artist Wang Lei (王雷) some of his memorabilia from his Olympic days. Talk about lucky!
Yesterday (26th July), Wang Lei posted a photo of himself with Chong Wei. Between them, they were proudly displaying a racket and a jersey with Chong Wei’s name on it. “Thank you Datuk Lee Chong Wei for the unique badminton racket and uniform which he used in the 2016 Olympic Games,” Wang Lei wrote. “It’s priceless to me!” He jokingly added that the items still had Chong Wei’s sweat on them.
Apparently, the actor had been touring Malaysia when the two met up in Kuala Lumpur. Wang Lei and Chong Wei have always been good friends. In fact, Chong Wei previously gifted him another racket. But, Wang Lei supposedly auctioned it off later for charity for about RM240,000. This time, the singer-actor claimed that he would not be auctioning these off.
However as it turns out, Lee Chong Wei had some ‘terms and conditions’ attached to the gift. “Big bro Wang Lei,” he solemnly said in his own post. “Please take care of my racket. You may use this to go challenge LKY (Loh Kean Yew, not Lee Kuan Yew).” He also added that in exchange for the racket, he was hoping Wang Lei would find him acting roles. “I wanna act as your father. So, indirectly, Mark Lee Kok Huang is your grandfather,” he said, adding that Mark had played as his dad in his biopic.
Netizens were quick to celebrate and express envy towards Wang Lei for his gifts. However, others took the opportunity to congratulate him on expanding his family tree as well. “Congratulations to Wang Lei for getting both a father and a grandfather (in one go),” one comment read.
We’re not quite sure who came out on top for this ‘deal’. However, netizens seem to think both sides are lucky. Wang Lei did get some priceless gifts, while Chong Wei secured a son and a grandson for himself and his ‘dad’. Well, the duo are certainly used to each others’ antics, that’s for sure!
