Say what you want about his outspoken public persona, but there’s no denying that Kanye West is one of the most talented musicians of our generation.
The genius producer has consistently produced and released some really good music that attracted praises from fans and critics. His live performances are routinely critically acclaimed, which led him to become one of the most sought-after acts for major music festivals.
Now, according to The Daily Star, the “No More Parties in L.A.” rapper is planning to record covers of David Bowie‘s music.
The report came a week after Bowie’s death was announced. A source told the tabloid that some of the songs will be “straightforward cover versions with Kanye actually singing” while others will see him “rapping with his own lyrics over Bowie’s music”. The source also claimed that the rapper “sees himself as a successor to Bowie in terms of musical innovation”.
However, in less than 24 hours, an online petition has been launched to stop West from recording the cover album.
Titled “Stop Kanye West recording covers of David Bowie’s music“, the petition was set up by Peter Piranha on the 38 Degrees website. On the “Why it’s important” column, Piranha wrote that Bowie “was one of the single most important musicians of the 20th and 21st century”. He added that “it would be a sacrilege to let it be ruined by Kanye West”.
Neither the rapper nor his representative confirmed the rumours, but it certainly didn’t stop some music fans from attempting to prevent him torecord a David Bowie cover album. As at time of writing, the petition has gained over 6.2k signatures.
This isn’t the first time that a petition against West was launched. Back in 2015, A Norfolk resident launched a petition to stop the rapper from performing at Glastonbury.
Though the petition received 10k signatures, it didn’t stop the rapper from performing at the festival. His rendition of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” at the festival received mixed reviews from fans and critics.
