Johor Bahru Mall Slammed For Using “Lame” & “Wacky-looking” Dragon Decor

2024 started off strong with plenty of malls flaunting their Chinese New Year dragon decor. We had impressive ones, such as Sunway Pyramid’s which took the crown, and others giving their all to bring the CNY cheer with their decorations.

But, as it turns out Plaza Pelangi in Johor Bahru was recently revealed to have lackluster decorations, and it mainly had to do with their awkward, wacky-looking dragon. Needless to say, netizens were quick to flock to the Facebook post to deliver their own witty commentary on it.

Some joked that the dragon reminded them of the ‘derp face’ meme, posting the photos side by side to show how similar they looked. Another said it was a “cross-eyed dragon” while one opined the dragon reminded them of the Pokemon Gyarados. A few also felt the awkward-looking dragon still looked “cute”. One joked it “can fight with Singapore’s” referring to their China Town’s dragon which had earlier come under scrutiny for the same issue.

Others marveled at the mall’s bold move of putting up such a decoration. “This mall is extraordinarily brave,” one mused. Another attributed their dismal attempt to having a low budget. But, one netizen chided the rest. “Don’t laugh la, you can see some of the shops (have) no one renting it. Means it’s a low traffic mall,” they pointed out. “At least they decorated, already giving some (respect) to CNY.”

As it turns out, Plaza Pelangi too wasn’t very happy with the decorations. The mall commented on the post soon after it went up, saying: “We regret to inform our valued patrons that the recent Chinese New Year decoration, particularly the dragon design, fell short of expectations due to a lapse in quality by our appointed contractor. In light of this, we have promptly removed the decoration.”

Well, Plaza Pelangi’s dragon certainly stood out from the rest, although not in a way they envisioned. Still, hopefully next year’s decorations will be enough to wow visitors!
