Yesterday (3rd September 2024, Tuesday), the Malaysian Islamic Development Department aka JAKIM released a statement, spotlighting a number of popular restaurants in Malaysia that are not fully halal-certified.
The 5 restaurants in question were Johnny’s Restaurants, Black Canyon, Mr. Dakgalbi, Bungkus Kaw Kaw, Dolly Dim Sum, and Ayam Penyet Best. Shortly after JAKIM’s social media post went viral online, Dolly Dim Sum stated that their central kitchen is halal-certified and the company in the process of obtaining certification for its outlets. Ayam Penyet Best also shared that 4 of its outlets hold a valid halal certification.

Following that, the management from Johnny’s Restaurants & Black Canyon Malaysia released a statement to address the public’s concerns.
“Johnny’s Restaurants and Black Canyon Malaysia are yet to be “Halal Certified” by JAKIM.
However, both restaurants assured that all the ingredients used in their restaurants including chicken, eggs, meats, and other raw materials are sourced from suppliers with Halal Certification. These certificates are available for in-store viewing. Johnny’s Restaurant and Black Canyon Malaysia also clarified that there is absolutely no usage of any form of alcohol or wine in the production of their food or beverages.
Both companies recognise the importance of Halal Certification to their customers and are working towards securing the Halal certification from JAKIM for their Central Kitchen and the individual certification for all their outlets.
These efforts are part of their priority to deliver delicious, safe and authentic Thai food to all Malaysians as well as their continued recognition and gratitude towards the customer trust given over the years.”
