After the late producer, Jon Landau posted a photo on Instagram back in 2021 of the sensational Malaysian-born actress Tan Sri Dato Michelle Yeoh (杨紫琼) on the set of the third “Avatar” movie, titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” fans began speculating about her involvement in the upcoming film. The photo has sparked excitement, leading many to believe she will play a significant role in the upcoming sequel.
However, in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, director James Cameron revealed the disappointing news that Michelle Yeoh will not be making her debut in the next “Avatar” movie. This declaration has left many fans heartbroken, as they were eagerly anticipating her appearance in the film.

“Michelle Yeoh won’t be in [the 3rd movie]. She’s in the 4th and 5th,” stated the director. The 3-time Academy-award winning filmmaker clarified that the earlier reports were slightly inaccurate, and stated that Michelle would later be joining the production to portray an interesting and fun character, known as the scientist Dr. Karina Mogue.
He also mentioned that they have already started working on the fourth movie as they speak. Due to the young cast members being on set, they had to start filming early to prevent them from ageing too quickly for their characters on screen.
“We love Michelle. She was always a movie star, but she’s blown up into a huge, huge phenomenon. I look forward to working with her,” James said. He added that the character of the Oscar-winning actress will bring an exciting new element to the Pandora universe.

Even though fans were a bit disappointed by the inaccurate reports, many are still eagerly anticipating the third movie, “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” set to be released on 19th December 2025. This will allow them to look forward to Michelle Yeoh’s character making her appearance in the fourth movie, set to release in 2029.
While you wait for the third film to hit your nearest cinema, why not relive the action and adventure in the second movie, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” to catch up on what you might have missed?
