#ItsAleGood: 6 Scenarios That Prove Malaysians Always Look On The Bright Side

Contrary to popular belief, Malaysians are a pretty easygoing lot. And because we’re laid back like that, more often than not, we’re able to cast our worries aside and look on the bright side of things.

Here are some scenarios that prove Malaysians always look on the bright side:

1. So many words to say it

If it’s real trivial, we just don’t worry about it – and we make it known. The fact that we have so many words and ways to describe Malaysians looking on the bright side of things is testament to our “tidak apa” culture, with “Nemai” or “Nevermind lah” being one of the most common expressions. “Chillax” or “Chillax lah” is also another, as well as “Lepak ‘ah”, “Rilek”, “It’s okay lah”, “Takpe lah”, “Okay je” and a host of other words. It’s ale good lah.

2. When your friend is late

“Otw otw”, “One more corner”, “Finding parking”. These are common excuses used by friends who are running late. It’s a real test of patience and sometimes, friendship. But instead of kicking up a fuss, most of us are content with keeping occupied with our smartphones while passing it off as “Malaysian timing” and proceed to ordering a pint (or two) of ale good to get the night started as soon as said friend arrives 😉

3. Have food, will queue

Scorching hot sun? Lines for miles? Stomach about to eat itself inside out from hunger? Who cares! Malaysians generally aren’t fussed about how long the queues are. It’s ale good because the more people, the longer the line, the better the food. Malaysians have inhuman patience when it comes to good food. Malaysian logic.

4. Understanding double-parkers

In the same “have inhuman patience” vein, Malaysians have got this horrible practise of double-parking. In fact, some Malaysians love to double-park if it’s for just a short food (read: “tapau”) stop or an ATM run. And that’s ale good, as long as said double-parker leaves his/her contact information on the dashboard near the windshield.

5. Sharing is caring

We all know how frustrating it can be to have to wait for tables at a kopitiam during lunch hour or on weekends. Much more so if your tummy is ready to throw a tantrum and eat itself inside out due to the hunger. Luckily, us Malaysians, we don’t mind being communal. No table? It’s ale good. That table at that corner looks like it can fit 3 more people. Can share, right? 🙂

6. “Have you eaten?”

Bad day? Presentation went awry? Got a shelling from the boss? Most problems can be solved with some complaining – or food. This applies across the board for most Malaysians. A simple, “Have you eaten? Let’s go for an awesome meal.” from a family member or a friend can turn a bad day around. Better yet if it’s a, “Nevermind lah. Let’s go for a drink!” 😉
