Is National Footballer Faisal Halim Retiring Early After The Acid Attack?

All eyes continue to be on national footballer Faisal Halim as his injury from the shocking acid attack puts a question mark on his sporting career. The Selangor FC player was shopping in a mall at Kota Damansara on 5th May (Sunday) when he was suddenly splashed with acid by an unspecified assailant.

Selangor FC chief executive officer Dr Johan Kamal Hamidon spoke to the press, revealing that the acid used in the attack was a highly corrosive concentrated sulfuric acid which caused fourth-degree burns. Dr Johan said that Faisal is now in stable yet critical condition and will continue to receive treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU).

As for his career, there are allegations that Faisal’s injuries may force him into an early retirement. A sports reporter said the footballer has shown little to no reaction on his left hand, which could affect his performance. Selangor FC vice president Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar confirmed that the athlete had limited movement and speech following the attack, adding that the left side was significantly affected. However, the vice president didn’t address the retirement rumours but said Faisal may have to go on a months-long hiatus to recover.

In the meantime, Selangor FC will be placing their players under supervision. The football club will also isolate players deemed a potential target for safety reasons. However, practice for the club continues as usual but with added security. Selangor FC was to play against Johor this Friday, but there is no news of any cancellations.

The attack against Faisal is the second attack against a national footballer within a week. Just last week, Akhyar Rashid was beaten with a baton while in Kuala Terengganu. Investigations for both cases are ongoing. We hope for a smooth recovery for the two athletes – and that the perpetrators receive apt punishment for their actions.
