Have you ever felt like you were walking on eggshells in a relationship? If so, you might be dealing with toxicity.

Toxic relationships can sneak up on you, like a bad smell in an elevator—unpleasant and hard to ignore! They often come wrapped in charming smiles, only to reveal emotional chaos lurking beneath the surface.

In my own experience, my ex had a unique talent for gaslighting. I remember one time I was commuting by train and ended up late for an event due to delays—an issue completely out of my control. Instead of understanding, my ex turned it into a full-blown accusation. Apparently, I was the only person in the world capable of causing train delays. “Have you eaten yet?” was now a coded question for “Are you cheating on me?” Classic, right?

Recognising the toxicity can feel like spotting a unicorn in a field of horses. It’s not easy! Early signs often include feeling anxious instead of happy when you talk to your partner. If your gut tells you something’s off, it’s time to pay attention. Sometimes, we ignore the red flags, convincing ourselves that love conquers all—except, of course, that love’s not a magic spell that fixes everything.

The impact of a toxic relationship can be profound. It might leave you feeling like you’re stuck in a never-ending episode of a reality show where the stakes are your mental health. I’ve heard of people becoming traumatised, leading to issues like depression. The emotional drain can make you feel like a smartphone with a dying battery—constantly searching for a charger but never finding one.

So, what do you do when you find yourself in a toxic situation? First, consider seeking help. Talk to friends, family, or professionals who can offer support. Setting boundaries might feel like drawing a line in the sand, but trust me, it’s necessary. You need to take care of yourself and say, “Nope! Not today, toxicity!”

Once you muster the courage to address the situation, you might find it’s easier than expected. Leaving a toxic relationship can be one of the most empowering moments of your life—like shedding a heavy winter coat in the middle of summer! You’ll discover that there’s a world of healthy relationships waiting for you, filled with laughter and love instead of fear and confusion.

Finally, if there’s one piece of advice I can give, it’s this: love yourself more than you love others. It sounds clichéd, but self-love is the best love! If you find yourself in a relationship where you’re constantly questioning your worth or feeling like you’re walking on eggshells, run—not walk—away. Your mental health matters, and you deserve a partner who lifts you up instead of holding you down.

So, here’s to recognising those toxic relationships and dodging them like they’re the last slice of pizza at a party. Your happiness is worth fighting for!
