For many musicians, winning a Grammy Award is their biggest goal. In a recent update, the award ceremony announced new categories and changes to its eligibility, which should have increased the chances of winning. However, the changes sparked more criticism than support, particularly from K-Pop fans.
Earlier this week, the Recording Academy announced it’s introducing five new categories for the 69th Annual Grammy Awards, bringing the total categories to 100. Among the five new categories, the one that caught the most attention is “Best Asian Pop Music Performance”. This category recognises excellence in Asian pop music performances, including but not limited to K-Pop, J-Pop and C-Pop.

The introduction of this new category marks the first time the Grammys have created a special category exclusively for Asian music. The ceremony already has several categories that are exclusive to a geographic region, including “Best African Music Performance” and “Best Música Mexicana Album (including Tejano)”. As such, many fans see the move as a sign of a Western ceremony recognising Asian artists and talent.
However, the move also sparked criticism of deliberately separating Asian acts from major categories, such as “Record Of The Year” and “Album Of The Year”. Many fans argued that having a region-specific category means the ceremony won’t consider Asian stars like BTS (방탄소년단) for higher-tier categories, despite the group having the qualifications. In case you’re wondering, the septet has been nominated multiple times but has never won.

Notably, this new “Best Asian Pop Music Performance” gives BTS a substantial chance of finally securing a Grammy after multiple losses, with music critics saying the group is a leading contender. However, fans quipped that winning in this new category doesn’t offer the same level of prestige, even arguing that it gives the Grammys a chance to “award” the group without actually recognising their global impact.
It’s also worth noting that there is a strict eligibility criterion for the new category, but songs not eligible for “Best Asian Pop Music Performance” remain eligible in other appropriate categories. The entry submission period for the 69th Grammy Awards is from 7th July (Tuesday) to 28th August 2026 (Friday), and the ceremony will take place on 7th February 2027 (Sunday).
