We literally just covered about how LRT passengers are frustrated over the poor crowd control management and train frequency issues but now we might have a solution (or possibly an even bigger problem?). It was announced that we’re getting free RapidKL rides for a whole month starting today (Thursday, 16th June).

Speaking at the launch event, Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri made the announcement that commuters will get to enjoy these free rides which includes the MRT, LRT, BRT, Monorail and the RapidKL bus. But why the free rides all of a sudden? And will it do more good than bad?

It’s been reported that the one month free rides promo for all RapidKL public transportation is in conjunction with the launch of the MRT Putrajaya Line Phase 1 which is happening today at 3pm. “I hope every city folk will take this opportunity to try public transport. Leave your vehicles at Park N Ride,” said the Prime Minister.

To recap, there will be a total of 36 stations involved for the Putrajaya line but only 12 will be opened for Phase 1. The PJ line will provide MRT passengers a seamless transfer to the MRT Kajang Line at Kwasa Damansara station. In terms of frequency, trains are expected to arrive every 4 minutes with each trip being able to carry 1.2k passengers.

While the free RapidKL rides is nice and all but how exactly does this fix the current issues we’re facing? Will it improve the poor crowd control management at LRT stations and train frequency problems? If anything, the free rides might just add fuel to the fire as more people will use these transportation thus causing more traffic. Don’t take our word for it, here’s what netizens have to say:

So far, there’s still no updates from RapidKL, the Prime Minister nor the Minister of Transport about the current issues people have been complaining about lately. Guess we’re just going to have to wait and see what happens next.
