Hide the lasagnas because our all time favourite comic strip cat, Garfield, is returning to the silver screens!

The new animated adaption of the classic character will be produced by Alcon Entertainment and the creator of the comic series, Jim Davis, will also serve as executive producer.

Published in 1978, “Garfield” is a popular American comic strip created by cartoonist Jim Davis and it centres around a fat orange cat named Garfield and his funny interactions with his owner, Jon Arbuckle, and Jon’s pet dog, Odie.

The strip holds the Guinness record for being the most widely published comic strip in the world as it is seen in 2,580 newspapers and journals, with an estimated readership of 260 million.

According to Alcon Entertainment, their goal is to create and build a franchise of fully CG-animated “Garfield” feature films. “Jim Davis’ creation has been an international sensation for all ages for decades, and we are thrilled to bring an animated ‘Garfield’ feature to the big screen,” said Alcon in a official press release.

This is not the first “Garfield” movie we’ve seen.

So far, the lovable cat has already had 2 live-action/CG feature films in the past: “Garfield: The Movie” (2004) and “Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties” (2006). Both movies were voiced by Golden Globe-winning actor Bill Murray (from “The Jungle Book” and “St. Vincent”).

At this point, no writer details or a release date for the animated film have been confirmed yet, but we sure are excited to see the food-loving cat on the big screens again. Hopefully, the new “Garfiled” film can match up to last year’s hit animated comic strip-turn-movie, “The Peanuts Movie”.
