Things are shaking up in the Korean entertainment industry as there have been multiple drug abuse allegations among celebrities. What made these allegations interesting is that the cases may be linked to one another.
More names have been revealed as investigations are still ongoing and fans were shocked to discover that some of their favourite celebs may be involved in the case. Here’s a list of Korean celebrities who were reported to be involved in the alleged drug abuse case recently:
1. Lee Sun-kyun (이선균)
“Parasite” star Lee Sun-kyun’s name first popped up in the drug abuse case after it was reported that a famous actor had been taken into custody by Incheon Police over alleged drug abuse in local bars and their homes. According to Korean reports, authorities had launched an investigation into eight suspects, including the actor.
Due to this case, the 48-year-old has been removed from an upcoming project. “Following an unfortunate incident last week with the actor Lee Sun-kyun, he expressed that it would take a considerable amount of time to sort out the current situation and that he will inevitably drop out,” said Studio X+U in a statement released earlier this week.
It is not confirmed whether the Korean celeb was actually involved in the drug case. However, according to his attorney, he agreed to assist the police in their investigation. The actor’s agency also stated that he filed a complaint against an unnamed individual, who is connected to the incident, for continuous blackmail and threats.
2. Jung Da-eun
Not to be mistaken with the actress and singer of the same name. As previously mentioned, police are currently investigating 8 individuals who are involved in the alleged drug case and it was reported that broadcaster-turned-composer Jung Da-eun was mentioned during their investigations.
However, just like Lee Sun-kyun, the details of the composer’s alleged involvement have yet to be confirmed. According to Korea Joongang Daily, the musician was previously arrested for drug abuse back in 2016 and again in 2021. She was reportedly also a close acquaintance of an unnamed aspiring singer who is said to be allegedly involved in the drug abuse case as well.
3. G-Dragon (지드래곤)
Former leader of K-pop boyband BIG BANG (빅뱅), G-Dragon is the latest celeb to be arrested for an alleged drug abuse case. According to multiple sources, the rapper was booked yesterday (Wednesday, 25th October) for breaching the Narcotics Control Act and is currently under investigation.
Details about his arrest have yet to be confirmed. YG Entertainment released a statement later that evening saying that, “[G-Dragon] is currently not an artist under our agency, so it is difficult for us to make an official response.” In a separate statement, the agency said that they are currently looking into the reports.
Despite the rumours and speculations linking G-Dragon’s case with the aforementioned celebrities, the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency confirmed that the cases have no connection.
