Before making their debut, some trainees had the opportunity to showcase their talents by being backup dancers for their seniors or even contributing to songwriting on several tracks. Last month, BIGHIT MUSIC’s new boy group CORTIS (코르티스) made their debut with their first single “GO!”.
The members were then officially introduced, and we learned that 2 of them, James (제임스) and Martin (마틴), produced a few popular tracks for their seniors, including TXT’s “Deja Vu” from their “Minisode 3: Tomorrow” EP, released last year, but did you know that the former actually choreographed for other idols prior to debut? Here are the ones he contributed:
Tomorrow X Together – “Deja Vu”

Not only did James contribute to producing the music for his seniors’ hit track, but he was also credited as one of the choreographers. In the 2nd episode of CORTIS’ documentary series, the rookie idol revealed that he worked on the most memorable parts of choreographies, noting that he wanted them to be the highlight of the live performances.
In the brief behind-the-scenes footage, it’s hinted that the 19-year-old was the one who came up with the high kick for Yeonjun’s dance break in “Deja Vu”, which ended up being one of the TXT member’s most iconic moves.
ILLIT – “Magnetic”

Of course, the most memorable part of any song is the chorus, so the choreography needs to be just as striking. James was apparently behind the choreography for the chorus of ILLIT’s “Magnetic”. In the docu-series, the singer was also shown drafting the routine in one of the label’s recording studios.
Since the release of the song and its music video, it has become an instant hit with fans worldwide, many of whom have taken part in the dance challenge, described as featuring some of the most intricate hand movements in K-pop.
ILLIT – “Tick-Tack”

James sure has a knack for choreographing for female idols. He mentioned in the CORTIS docu-series that he’s always been very comfortable expressing himself through dancing, so it’s no surprise then that coming up with the routine for his seniors would be no issue for him. The idol revealed that he came up with the iconic head movement in the second and final choruses of ILLIT’s “Tick Tack”.
ILLIT – “Cherish (My Love)”

ILLIT’s “Cherish (My Love)” was not mentioned in the CORTIS docu-series, nor was James officially credited in the music videos or dance practice. However, according to Korean media reports, he was involved in choreographing parts of the song. It remains unclear which sections of the routine he contributed to, though fans hope he may share more about his participation in future interviews.
Bonus: CORTIS – “GO!”

This one was more of a group effort, but it is still worth noting that James and his fellow members took part in choreographing their own song “GO!”. In addition, CORTIS also directed the accompanying music video. Though still a rookie group, their creative involvement in both their own work and that of their seniors demonstrates their potential as a force to be reckoned with.
With more experience, they may one day reach the heights of their seniors, like BTS and TXT.
