Relations between author J.K. Rowling and the original main cast of the “Harry Potter” film franchise have not been the same in recent years. In 2020, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint all voiced their disagreement with the writer’s controversial views on transgender issues, creating a rift in their relationship.
The actors have reportedly not been on speaking terms with her since, while J.K. (real name Joanne) has continued to share questionable posts that many former “Harry Potter” fans interpret as shading or mocking the stars for opposing her political stance. It appears to be happening again, after Emma Watson spoke out about her views on the situation.

Over the weekend, actress and activist Emma Watson appeared on the Jay Shetty podcast, where she discussed a range of topics, from her acting hiatus and her experience working on Harry Potter to current world issues. Two points that stood out most were the genocide in Palestine and her strained relationship with J.K. Rowling, both of which she received criticism for.
Speaking about Palestine, specifically in response to the Israeli ambassador labelling her antisemitic for her stance against the genocide, Emma said: “People don’t feel like they can talk about what’s happening safely. This duality is created where we don’t seem able to care about the victims of terrorism and care about the genocide that’s happening in Palestine. Both things have to be allowed to be true.” Fans expressed disappointment with the actress, believing she was being too cautious in her statement, as if attempting to appeal to both sides.
As for J.K. Rowling, the 35-year-old said she could never cancel her for anything, explaining: “I can love her, I can know she loved me, I can be grateful to her, and there can be this whole other thing. I still treasure Jo and the person that she was, with whom I had personal experiences. I will never believe that one negates the other, and that my experience of that person I don’t get to keep and cherish. I think the thing I’m most upset about is that a conversation was never made possible.” She also expressed hope that the rift between them might one day be healed.

Her statement not only drew backlash from fans who felt she should not give Joanne any benefit of the doubt, but also prompted a response from the author herself, who appeared to throw shade at her in a tweet. The “Harry Potter” creator shared a parody video mocking Emma’s openness to speak with her about trans rights, writing: “I’m here for all the spoofs.”
While it is understandable that Emma Watson chose to be cautious in her statements, given the sensitivity of these issues, it is clear that fans would prefer her to be more forthright in her stance and to acknowledge the severity of the situation. What are your thoughts on this?
