Mads Mikkelsen has played many iconic villain roles throughout his career.

One of his most memorable roles was his portrayal of Dr. Hannibal Lecter, the main antagonist of the critically acclaimed “Hannibal” TV series. The Danish actor also delivered a stunning performance as scarred villain Le Chiffre in “Casino Royale”, the 21st film in the Eon Productions James Bond film series.

Though production on Marvel‘s upcoming superhero film “Doctor Strange” is currently underway, details regarding Mikkelsen’s role have been kept under wraps… until now.

In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly’s “First Look”, executive producer Stephen Broussard confirmed that Mikkelsen will play the main villain in the Benedict Cumberbatch-starred Marvel film. The name of the character was not disclosed and according to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, they have yet to see anyone guessing it correctly.

He said:

We will take audiences through sort of a guide to the multiverse, other dimensions, and there are amazing things out there — wonders that are going to be hopefully visually extremely interesting and unique to this movie. But there are also very scary things in these other dimensions.

“Mads’ character is a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect. (He) believes that the Ancient One is just protecting her own power base and that the world may be better off if we were to allow some of these other things through,” he explained.

In the same issue, details regarding Rachel McAdams’ character in “Doctor Strange” were also revealed.

According to Feige, the “Southpaw” star is playing “a fellow surgeon who has a history with Strange and is his sort of lynchpin to his old life, once he steps into the role of a sorcerer”. “She is someone he connects with at the beginning, and reconnects with, and helps anchor his humanity,” he described.

Broussard also said:

Rachel McAdams is sort of (Doctor Strange’s) contemporary in the modern-day New York world, before and after he goes on this crazy journey.

“So, she sees him before, she sees him after. She’s kind of this audience point of view,” he added.

Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange on EW

Cumberbatch is playing the title character and according to the “Sherlock” star, “there are all sorts of craziness (in Doctor Strange)”. “Falling, flying, jumping, fighting, punching, getting punched. It’s really rough and tumble,” he added.

Feige told the magazine:

When this comic appeared in the early 60s, it really informed, in a way that is pretty amazing, a lot of the psychedelic 60s as we know it.

“I don’t know that they were doing anything weird in the bullpen in Marvel, but certainly the stuff they were doing inspired all those people who were doing mind-expansion experiments at the time. So, that’s inherent to the property. And that’s our mission statement for the visual effects on this movie,” he added.

Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” will follow the story of Doctor Stephen Strange, a cocky neurosurgeon who discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions after a horrific car accident.

Tilda Swinton is attached to play The Ancient One while Chiwetel Ejiofor plays the good doctor’s arch foe, Baron Mordo. Michael Stuhlbarg and Scott Adkins are starring in it as well, but details regarding their roles are undisclosed.

Principal photography took place in Kathmandu, Nepal last month and filming will continue to take place in few other locations around the world, including London, New York, and Hong Kong.
