In a hot country like Malaysia, it’s no shocker that we’re big cold treat lovers – so it’s even more exciting to know that internationally beloved ice cream shop, Dairy Queen, is coming back! The brand, known for their thick and creamy blizzard desserts that won’t fall out even when flipped over, once had several outlets in Malaysia, but they reportedly closed down over a decade ago. At the time of writing, we cannot confirm the reason for Dairy Queen’s exit from the country, but it is clear that many Malaysians have missed the brand.

However, the ice cream chain continues to thrive in other Southeast Asian countries, such as Indonesia and Thailand, which is one of the reasons it remains popular among Malaysians. Aside from the fact that it’s no longer available in our nation, the food is reportedly cheaper in neighbouring countries, leaving many locals longing for more. Thankfully, we no longer need to travel abroad, as it has now been confirmed that Dairy Queen will be reopening its first branch in Malaysia soon, at Sunshine Central in Penang!

This post from Facebook user I Love To Eat 我就是愛吃喝玩樂 reignited hope for local Dairy Queen fans, as the user shared a picture of the “coming soon” Dairy Queen store sign. The photo sparked excitement among netizens, welcoming the ice cream chain back to Malaysia. This time, it is hoped that the dessert shop will remain in business for the long term and open more outlets throughout the country, particularly in the Klang Valley area, where there is likely to be high demand.

In another post on Instagram by @penangfoodie, many locals expressed their anticipation for the opening. While netizens couldn’t wait to head to Penang and flood Sunshine Central to get their hands on the treats, some complained that the location of the first outlet was less than ideal.

As of now, there are no official opening dates, but we’ll keep an eye out for any updates! Are you excited about the return of Dairy Queen to Malaysia? Have you tried it before?
