It’s been a while since EXO last performed as a group in Malaysia. While we await their comeback, some members have graced us with their presence by performing here throughout the year. The latest member who had fans screaming at the top of their lungs on Friday (8th November) was none other than Chen (첸).
Taking place at Mega Star Area, Kuala Lumpur, the idol’s “Beyond The Door” fan-con gave us an insight into his personal thoughts as well as leaving his beloved admirers wanting more. Here are some of our personal highlights from the show:
As soon as the lights dimmed, EXO fans screamed for the singer, waving their lightsticks in unison. Chen kicked off the show with his song “Empty” and, despite the title, the atmosphere felt anything but empty as his powerful voice echoed through the venue, captivating the audience with his heartfelt lyrics. Keeping us in a trance, the vocalist performed “Dandelion”, a beautiful ballad that left fans with a sense of hope and resilience during difficult times.
After engaging with members of the crowd, the EXO member entertained us with a “finish-the-lyrics” game aptly named the “Chen-llenge”. The artist had us laughing with the silly costumes he donned whenever he failed to complete the lyrics. Our favourite moment, as well as his, was when he put on the alien costume. Chen carried on with the show, adorably performing “Playlist” and “Fall In Love Again” while still wearing the dinosaur onesie from the “Chen-llenge” segment.
While the 32-year-old stepped offstage for an outfit change, fans were invited to take a closer look at his personal thoughts during a video intermission. In the video, the singer explained more about his songwriting process and the things that bring him comfort. Once he was back on stage, the vocalist had us in tears with “Beautiful Goodbye”, reminding us that all good things must come to an end. To show his gratitude to the fans who have always supported him and his bandmates, Chen dedicated the next song, “Love You”, to the audience.
Throughout the entire concert, Chen showcased incredible breath control and vocal projection, reminding fans why he’s the main vocalist of EXO. Sadly, the event was drawing to a close. After promising that he would be back next time, he ended the fan con with “Starlight”, accompanied by a sea of actual star-shaped lights held by fans in the audience.
As you may know, a concert doesn’t officially end until the lights are on. Many screamed for an encore, and, much to everyone’s delight, Chen returned to the stage to perform two more songs: “Everytime” and “Best Luck”. Before saying his final goodbye, he promised fans that he would do his best to return with a two-day concert the next time he’s in Malaysia. We hope he keeps that promise. Until then, we’ll continue to cherish the memories of “Beyond The Door”.
