Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that Labubu dolls are all the rage right now. These collectable figures from POPMART are the favourite of many celebrities, and some would even pay good money to grow their collection.
Recently, news outlets reported that Chinese singer Tiger Hu Yanbin (胡彦斌) had spent 28,000 yuan (approximately RM16,500) on Labubu dolls. The rumours started after netizens discovered that a user on a shopping platform had dropped a whopping amount of money on the limited edition “Labubu The Monsters x VANS” collaboration collection. The user has Tiger’s photo as their profile picture and the same last name as the singer.

These two details led many to believe that the user was indeed the vocalist himself. Additionally, Chinese news outlets reported that Tiger registered for the shopping platform and completed a real-name authentication. Unfortunately, the online shopping platform couldn’t disclose whether the user was the 41-year-old star. However, the staff clarified that the RM16,500 purchase was genuine and that the buyer did purchase the Labubu dolls.
While it’s common for stars to drop big money on their hobbies, Tiger’s Labubu purchase came with mixed reactions. While some were amused by how much the singer would pay to get the dolls, others lamented the purchase, saying it was unnecessary. Some even argued that the money could’ve gone to other items or charities. However, neither Tiger nor his team has spoken up about this matter.

Tiger isn’t the only star obsessed with the Labubu dolls because BLACKPINK’s Lisa is also known for her love for the POPMART characters. She’s even credited for putting Labubu dolls in the spotlight. Last November, she appeared on Vanity Fair’s YouTube channel to show off her Labubu collection and knowledge of the dolls. Singers Rihanna, Madonna and Dua Lipa have also sported the dolls.
Even regular folks have spent a fortune on these POPMART dolls, so it’s not surprising that celebrities would drop more money on them, but what are your thoughts on this? Do you think it’s excessive to spend thousands on Labubu dolls?
