“And it harm none, do what ye will” – that is the Wiccan Reed that was also quoted in the original “Charmed” series.
That is also the motto for the women in The CW’s “Charmed” reboot. Madeleine Mantock, Melonie Diaz, and Sarah Jeffrey, who are playing the powerful witches trio, are hoping won’t bash the show until they’ve watch it.
“When we were cast, we went to work and shot it. That is our reality, so there’s not too much focus on the original. Of course we respect it, and I’m confident that it will remain intact and can be still enjoyed by everybody who really cherishes it,” Mantock was quoted as saying.
The 28-year-old actress added, “They’re very different entities. We want to honour what the original Charmed had and did but we’ve very much got our own thing going on.” She also assures fans that, “It’s a fresh take. The main similarities are there are three sisters. There are a few nods to the original in the pilot.”
When the remake made headlines a few months ago, it was met with backlash from hardcore fans and Holly Marie Combs (who played Piper Halliwell in the original series). “Here’s the thing. Until you ask us to rewrite it like Brad Kern did weekly don’t even think of capitalising on our hard work. Charmed belongs to the 4 of us, our vast amount of writers, crews and predominantly the fans. FYI you will not fool them by owning a title/stamp. So bye,” she wrote.
The “4 of us” Combs was referring to were Alyssa Milano, Shannen Doherty, Rose McGowan, and herself. They played a group of sisters who discover they are witches. The WB’s “Charmed” series lasted for 9 seasons, between 1998 to 2006.
The CW president Mark Pedowitz is hoping critics will give this upcoming reboot a chance. “Hopefully they would give this new cast a chance. It is not quite the same, yet there are many similarities. We are happy with who we cast, we think it’s a nice mix. We’re thrilled that Jennie Snyder Urman has reimagined it somewhat and I can only say to fans: Before you make a decision, watch the series,” he said.
Despite the tension between the new and former cast, Mantock shared that they’re open to have the original actresses come on board as cameos. To fans who are still skeptical about the new version of “Charmed”, Mantock responded, “We come in peace.”
