After shocking allegations of tax evasion, K-pop idol Cha Eun Woo (차은우) finally speaks up to address the situation. In his recent statement shared through Instagram, the star clarifies the allegations that have rocked the K-pop world.
For context, on 22nd January 2026 (Thursday), reports emerged that the Seoul Regional Tax Office was investigating Cha Eun Woo on suspicion of tax evasion. The National Tax Service had reportedly notified the ASTRO (아스트로) member of an additional tax assessment exceeding 20 billion won (approximately RM55 million) in taxes.
Cha Eun Woo’s agency, Fantagio, had previously released a statement, defending the idol against the allegations. However, it was only recently that Cha Eun Woo personally addressed the issue. On 26th January 2026 (Monday), the 29-year-old wrote through Instagram, apologising for causing concern and disappointment over the recent matters.
In his post, the star, who is currently serving his mandatory military service, also denied rumours that he enlisted to avoid the controversy. He clarified, “Last year, I was in a situation where I could no longer postpone my military enlistment, and thus I enlisted without being able to complete the tax investigation procedures.”
The statement continues with the idol expressing deep regret over the controversy, adding that he will reflect on his mistakes. Additionally, Cha Eun Woo, “I will faithfully participate in the tax-related procedures that will proceed in the future. Furthermore, I will humbly accept the final decision made by the relevant authorities and take full responsibility accordingly.”
As of now, Cha Eun Woo is still under investigation by the authorities. While fans have shown support for the star, the public reaction remains mixed since tax evasion is a serious crime. Given the shockingly high amount in this case, many also argued that this issue would still have a sizeable impact on Cha Eun Woo’s career, even if he’s found innocent.
