It has been brought to our attention that Chris Evans may be hanging up his shield for good once his contract ends after “Avengers 4”.
We already know that “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers 4” are going to shake up the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a huge way. Therefore, the battle with Thanos could result in Captain America/Steve Rogers’ death or retirement.
In speaking with Esquire, the 35-year-old actor revealed that he was initially offered a 9-picture contract back in 2010. Instead, he negotiated it down to 6, with the last 2 being the 2-part “Avengers” films. Technically, this makes 7 Marvel movies (4 “Avengers” blockbusters and 3 solo movies) in total, but the 2-part “Avengers” films may count as 1 since they’re being shot back-to-back.
Once his contractual obligations are done, the publication indicates that Evans is planning to move forward. “Settling in on the couch, he groans. Evans explains that he’s hurting all over because he just started his workout routine the day before to get in shape for the next 2 films. The movies will be shot back to back beginning in April. After that, no more red-white-and-blue costume for the 35-year-old. He will have fulfilled his contract,” reads the excerpt from the Esquire story.
During the interview, Evans also compared Steve Rogers to his lead character (Frank Adler) in the drama, “Gifted”. It seems that the Hollywood hunk wants to play more roles that offer the chance to be someone “more relatable”.
“With Steve Rogers, even though you’re on a giant movie with a huge budget and strange costumes, you’re still on a hunt for the truth of the character. That said, with Adler, it’s nice to play someone relatable. I think Julianne Moore said, ‘The audience doesn’t come to see you; they come to see themselves.’ Adler is someone you can hold up as a mirror for someone in the audience. They’ll be able to far more easily identify with Frank Adler than Steve Rogers,” Evans commented.
It is understandable that Evans would want to explore his options outside of MCU. If the Marvel star is indeed passing on his shield, fans will be heartbroken. Just like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Evans’ run as Captain America will be almost impossible to top.
Hopefully Evans will follow in Robert Downey Jr.’s footsteps in negotiating a deal that only requires him to star in future “Avengers” films.
