Members of public are advised to stay out of the historic Merdeka Square (Dataran Merdeka) during the upcoming Bersih 4.0 rally as the square will be used for the Merdeka Day preparations.
According to Malay Mail Online, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Amin Noordin stated that attendees of Bersih 4.0 are not allowed to use the square for their overnight rallies. However, he said that attendees are allowed “to assemble on sidewalks in the vicinity”.
The rallies, which will be held in 3 cities, aim to push for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s resignation plus institutional reforms to prevent prime ministerial corruption. It would begin at 2pm on 29th August and end at 11:59pm on 30th August.
The rallies demand 4 major objectives:
- Clean elections
- Clean governance
- Saving the economy
- Preserving the right to dissent
As the National Independence Day is approaching, the square will be used for Merdeka Day preparations instead.
After meeting with Bersih 2.0, Noordin said at a press conference:
They have accepted that they are not allowed into Dataran Merdeka by DBKL. They also promised that they won’t go into Dataran and they will be on the sidewalk and the surrounding area.
When asked what if attendees attempt to enter the square, he said, “DBKL and police will take action.” The KL mayor did not elaborate it further.
According to Noordin, Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah already pledged to keep out of the square during the days scheduled for the overnight rally.
