Avengers: Endgame has officially reclaimed its position as the highest-grossing film in cinematic history, surpassing James Cameron’s sci-fi blockbuster Avatar at the global box office. The Marvel Studios epic achieved the milestone following the successful theatrical run of Avengers Endgame: Encore, a special re-release cut that generated $126 million globally, pushing the film’s total lifetime earnings to an estimated $2.926 billion against Avatar’s $2.924 billion total.

The theatrical re-issue was strategically orchestrated by Disney and Marvel Studios to build momentum ahead of December’s upcoming release of Avengers: Doomsday. Positioned as essential viewing by directors Joe and Anthony Russo, the Encore edition enticed audiences back to theaters by pairing the 2019 Infinity Saga finale with four minutes of exclusive new footage that directly sets up the events of the upcoming installment.
This latest turn at the top marks another chapter in the ongoing box office rivalry between the two franchise giants, both of which now operate under the Disney corporate banner. Endgame originally took the lead from Avatar during its initial theatrical run in 2019, only for James Cameron’s epic to reclaim the top spot following a strategic theatrical re-release in 2021 ahead of its sequel.

Regardless of whatever big-screen giant takes the top place, Disney is celebrating. Disney currently controls 20th Century Fox, which produced “Avatar,” following their merger in 2019. Disney is in charge of seven of the top ten most grossing films, including “Avatar: The Way of Water” ($2.33 billion), “Titanic” ($2.26 billion), and “Avengers: Infinity War” ($2.05 billion), thanks to Fox’s film assets.
Driven by strong international performance and eager fan participation, Avengers: Endgame now holds the title as the highest-earning film of all time, both in its initial run and when accounting for cumulative theatrical re-releases.
