Unfortunately, artwork theft is a common thing in today’s day and age, and many artists have called out large businesses and government agencies for using their work without permission. Recently, Lithuanian mural artist Ernest Zacharevic, best known for his Penang murals, slammed AirAsia for using his work on one of their planes.

According to reports, the artist previously posted a photo of an AirAsia aircraft using his now-famous “Children On Bicycle” mural to decorate the forward part of the fuselage, just behind the cockpit. The mural at Armenian Street in George Town is one of Ernest’s most notable works and a tourist attraction in Penang. In his post, the artist tagged the airline and founder Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, with, “I think we need to talk…”

Speaking to the press, Ernest revealed that AirAsia had used the artwork without his permission, essentially stealing the artwork to use on its aircraft. The artist said he was surprised to see his painting on the plane, saying, “I first noticed it on my friend’s Instagram Story, and then I saw it myself at the airport on Friday (22nd November).”. The 38-year-old also lamented that it wasn’t the first time his artwork was reproduced without his consent.

Ernest said he’s now working with his team to speak with AirAsia on the issue, adding, “It’s time that a corporate giant like AirAsia demonstrates corporate responsibility and respect for (the) rights of artists and intellectual property.” When asked whether he’ll take legal action against the airline, the artist said, “I am hoping to resolve this quickly with AirAsia, but should such efforts prove futile, I am willing to go as far as it takes to put a stop to this for good.”

As of writing, AirAsia has yet to respond publicly regarding the issue. It’s also unclear how many AirAsia aircraft are using the livery. However, we hope both parties can settle this issue amicably. What are your thoughts on this?
