Digital travel platform Agoda reveals that Malaysian Gen Z travelers are taking a more communal approach to travel in 2026, with only 1 in 10 planning solo trips. Instead, many are choosing to travel with family, while also showing openness to different types of stays and trips that are easier to plan and enjoy together.
The insights are derived from a survey of Asian travelers conducted as part of Agoda’s 2026 Travel Outlook Report, and show that for Malaysian Gen Z, travel is becoming a more regular and flexible part of life. More than half expect to travel mostly domestically this year, while many also plan to take several trips across 2026, reflecting a generation that is looking for travel that feels accessible, enjoyable, and easy to fit into everyday routines.

Malaysian Gen Z is choosing shared travel over solo trips
One of the clearest characteristics of Malaysian Gen Z travel in 2026 is how communal it is. Agoda’s findings show that 41% of Malaysian Gen Z travelers plan to travel with family, while 38% expect to travel with a spouse or partner. By comparison, only 10% say they are likely to travel alone and another 10% say they will travel with friends. Together, this suggests that for many young Malaysian travelers, trips are shaped less by solo exploration and more by shared experiences with the people closest to them.
Travel is becoming more flexible and more regular
Malaysian Gen Z is also planning travel in ways that feel easier to fit around day-to-day life. More than half of respondents (52%) expect most of their travel in 2026 to be domestic, while 41% say they expect to travel both domestically and internationally in equal measure. In addition, 38% plan to take four to six trips over the year. For Malaysia Gen Z, travel is becoming a more regular part of life rather than something reserved for one major annual holiday.

Malaysian Gen Z is open to different types of stays
Accommodation preferences also reflect a flexible travel mindset. While hotels remain the top choice (48%), nearly 1 in 3 Malaysian Gen Z travelers (31%) say they prefer homes and apartments. This points to a generation that is open to different types of stays depending on the kind of trip they are taking and who they are traveling with.
Experiences continue to shape where and why travel takes place
While flexibility and convenience matter, experiences remain central to Malaysian Gen Z travel plans. Relaxation is the top reason Malaysian Gen Z expects to travel in 2026, with 76% of respondents citing it as a key priority. Cultural exploration (34%), culinary experiences (31%), and outdoor activities (28%) also rank amongst key motivations. Together, these findings show that Malaysian Gen Z is choosing trips that feel enjoyable, meaningful, and aligned with what they want to experience.
