The younger generation may recognise him as the “Nodding Meme Guy”, thanks to a scene from the 1972 film “Jeremiah Johnson” that became a popular reaction image on social media. Those more familiar with his body of work, however, will remember him from classics such as “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, “The Sting” and “The Way We Were”.
Regardless, actor, screenwriter and director Robert Redford left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry throughout his career. Sadly, yesterday (Tuesday, 16th September), it was reported that the Hollywood legend had died at the age of 89.
According to his longtime publicist, Cindi Berger, Robert Redford had “passed away at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah – the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy”. It was said that he died peacefully, in his sleep, and there had been no prior reports suggesting that the Oscar-winner’s health was in decline.
Nevertheless, the actor leaves behind an extraordinary legacy. He founded the Sundance Film Festival in 1981, now regarded as one of the most prestigious platforms for independent filmmakers and performers to showcase their work. In addition, the actor was widely recognised for his activism, championing environmental causes, Native American and Indigenous rights, as well as LGBT rights.
Among his most notable final films were “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014), “Pete’s Dragon” (2016), “Avengers: Endgame” (2019) and “Omniboat: A Fast Boat Fantasia” (2020). Robert Redford will definitely be remembered as one of Hollywood’s greatest legends. Following the announcement of his death, many of his former co-stars and peers paid tribute to their friend in official statements and across social media. Here are some of their messages:
We extend our condolences to Robert Redford’s family and hope they find strength during this difficult time.
