Hong Kong-based actor John Chiang Jr (姜卓文) is working hard to make a name for himself in the entertainment industry. However, as the son of veteran Hong Kong actor David Chiang (姜大衛), the 29-year-old constantly faces comments about him using his father’s name to get ahead in the game.
The actor recently shared his trip to France with David to an international film festival. Showing pride for his father, John wrote in his post, “Dad’s reach is global. We really appreciate all the love from the festival and the fans.”. The post generally received positive responses, with many fans praising the veteran star and acknowledging his decades-long career.

However, amidst the praises, one netizen wrote, “Benefit of being born into a successful family. Daddy money.”. The now-deleted comment seemingly mocked John, claiming he’s taking advantage of his father’s fame. In response, the Canadian-born actor said, “Indeed I’m extremely privileged to and grateful to be my father’s son! I work hard to repay them everyday as best as I can.”
John’s comment was a refreshing perspective from a celebrity’s child since many stars with famous parents, a.k.a “nepo babies”, would actively deny their privileges. Interestingly, David, who is also the child of renowned Chinese actors, has previously shared his opinion of his son following in his footsteps. In an interview, the 77-year-old spoke about the comparison between his son and actor Shaun Tam (谭俊彦), the son of his frequent collaborator, Ti Lung (狄龍).

David acknowledges that his son hasn’t reached Shaun’s level since the latter has already been in the industry for over 20 years. However, he also said, “There is no need to compare such things. There is no need to compare yourself to others. Just be yourself.” David added that his son faced a lot of pressure after entering the entertainment industry but has advised John to give his best in his work.
Being part of showbiz isn’t easy, even if you have famous parents. While John may face pressure simply for being David’s son, he can make a name for himself through his hard work and skills. What are your thoughts on this?
