Following the tragic fire at the Wang Fuk estate in Tai Po, many Hong Kong stars have reached out and donated to the victims, providing aid to help rebuild their lives. Unfortunately, those who never disclose their contribution end up being accused of not donating at all.
On 4th December 2025 (Thursday), Cantopop icon Sammi Cheng (鄭秀文) shared a lengthy post on Instagram to clarify some recent accusations. Many netizens previously suggested that the singer hadn’t been donating to the victims of the Tai Po fire because there were no reports of her contribution. Some even claimed that the star had only given “empty prayers” and words of encouragement.

Understandably, such accusations can be demeaning, prompting Sammi to speak up. In her post, the singer revealed that she donated HK$1 million on 28th November 2025, two days after the fire broke out. Sammi said she donated her assistant to the Hong Kong Red Cross and the Yan Chai Hospital. However, the singer said she’s embarrassed she had to publicise her donation because of the recent comments.
Sammi said, “The act of donating, for me, ends after giving. I don’t worry about whether the donation is reported. That’s not my focus. After the donation, I focus on whether the money from donors is properly used and distributed to those in need.” The singer also clarified that she shared prayers rather than publish her donation because of her faith, adding, “Sharing prayers is nothing new to me.”

The 53-year-old also defended the gesture, saying that prayers can also provide comfort for the victims. Sammi said, “Money is indeed important, but it is not the only way to show care. Sometimes, don’t underestimate the power of an online greeting, a warm and loving picture, a caring message, or a few words of encouragement. These can soothe a broken and adrift heart more than money.”
While she didn’t need to explain herself, we’re glad that Sammi could clarify and dispel the terrible rumours. However, during difficult times, we should come together, rather than make accusations that could divide us further. What are your thoughts on this?
