The day of the highly anticipated annual MAMA Awards is fast approaching. The ceremony is set to take place at Kai Tak Stadium, Hong Kong, on 28th and 29th November, and will be livestreamed exclusively on HBO Max. Several K-pop idols have already arrived for rehearsals, and it was recently reported that Tan Sri Dato’ Michelle Yeoh will be presenting at this prestigious Korean music event.
However, there is now a significant possibility that the awards could be postponed or cancelled after a nearby residential building was engulfed in flames, killing dozens and leaving hundreds still missing. Here’s what happened:

According to reports, a major fire broke out at the Wang Fuk Court housing complex yesterday (Wednesday, 26th November). The cause remains unknown, but the flames reportedly spread quickly through the bamboo scaffolding covering the buildings, which were undergoing renovations. The South China Morning Post reported that 44 people were killed in the tragedy, with 279 still missing. 45 people who are hospitalised are in critical condition.
At the time of writing, three men have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the fire. Videos and photos of the horrifying incident have since circulated online, raising concerns among netizens. One of the main topics being discussed is the possibility that the 2025 MAMA Awards could be postponed or cancelled out of respect for the victims of this tragedy.

According to The Chosun, the fire occurred approximately 20 kilometres, around a 20-minute drive, from Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Stadium, where the annual music awards ceremony is set to take place. The organisers are reportedly in discussions with presenters, including Michelle Yeoh, regarding their attendance. That said, even if the event goes ahead, major revisions to scripts and production plans are expected to avoid controversy and sensitive topics. At the time of writing, there has been no update on postponement or cancellation, but it is completely understandable if it does come to that decision.
Our deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in the tragedy, and may the victims find strength during this difficult time.
