6 Simple Ways To Start Your Traditional Chinese Medicine Journey

We don’t know about you, but recently TikTok has been pushing videos about Traditional Chinese Medicine from acupressure tips to warm drinks and slow-living rituals. What once felt niche or old-fashioned now feels surprisingly current, reframed as a more mindful, everyday approach to health and wellbeing.

At its core, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is all about balance and small daily habits. While trained practitioners use techniques like acupuncture, cupping, Chinese herbs and moxibustion, you don’t need a clinic visit to get started. Simple shifts in how you eat, move and rest can help you feel more in tune with your body and support long-term wellbeing. 

1. Stop Drinking Iced Drinks (Especially With Meals)

In TCM, cold drinks are believed to weaken digestion and slow down the body’s natural processes, particularly when consumed during meals. This is thought to place extra strain on the digestive system, making it harder for the body to absorb nutrients efficiently.

Try this: Opt for warm water or tea, and wait about an hour after meals before drinking to support smoother digestion.

2. Eat Mostly Cooked Food and Vegetables

According to TCM principles, cooked foods are gentler on the digestive system than raw foods, especially for those who experience bloating or low energy. Cooking is believed to make food easier for the body to process and transform into usable energy.

Try this: Steam, stir-fry or lightly cook your vegetables instead of eating them raw, without needing to overhaul your entire diet.

3. Eat Slowly and Without Distractions

In TCM, how you eat is just as important as what you eat. Rushing through meals or eating while distracted can interfere with digestion and prevent the body from fully benefiting from food.

Try this: Put your phone away, chew your food thoroughly and give yourself time to eat without multitasking.

4. Get Some Fresh Air Every Day

Spending time outdoors is believed to help rebalance both the mind and body in TCM. Fresh air and natural surroundings are thought to support the smooth flow of energy and improve overall mood and vitality.

Try this: Take a short walk outside each day, or open your windows wide while stretching or moving at home.

5. Stretch or Move Gently Before Bed

Rather than intense workouts, TCM encourages gentle movement to keep energy, or Qi, flowing smoothly through the body. Calming movement before sleep can help release tension and prepare the body for rest.

Try this: Incorporate light stretching, slow breathing or a short wind-down routine into your evening schedule.

6. Keep a Consistent Sleep Schedule

Rest plays a crucial role in TCM, as the body relies on regular rhythms to restore and repair itself. An inconsistent sleep routine can disrupt this balance and leave you feeling drained.

Try this: Aim to go to bed and wake up at roughly the same time every day, including weekends where possible.
