We’ve seen a couple of fancy restrooms in Malaysia. In fact, one coffee shop’s restroom even earned praise from the Minister of Local Government Development, Nga Kor Ming. In fact, the Malaysian politician decided that it was time for public restrooms around Malaysia to earn some sort of recognition if they were to meet certain criteria.

On Monday (30th October), the first-ever ‘Toilet Of The Year’ award ceremony was held and here is the list of the winners who have won the award in their respective cateogies.

In a tweet by Nga Kor Min, a total of 345 participants from all over the country competed in 5 categories for the ‘Toilet Of The Year’ award which are: Hotel industry, Shopping mall, Highway concession, Gas station and Restaurant. It was said that the aim of the award ceremony is to ensure that Malaysian public restrooms fulfill the Clean, Attractive, and Fragrant (BMW) requirements while also offering comfort to users.

Additionally, this award is also part of the preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2025. This will hopefully encourage more establishments to participate in the award in the future; as the cash prize for the winners will be increased from RM10,000 to RM20,000. Nga Kor Min also confirmed that they will be expanding the number of categories from 5 to 7 next year, which will include Schools and Local Councils.

So without any further ado, here are the winners of the ‘Toilet Of The Year 2023’ award for each of the 5 categories:

  • Hotel Industry: The George Group Penang
  • Shopping Mall: Toppen Shopping Mall, Johor Bahru
  • Highway Concession: Rest and Treatment (R&R) Stop Elmina Southbound, Selangor
  • Gas Station: Petron Senai, Johor
  • Restaurant: Cawan Mu Ipoh, Perak

During his speech at the ceremony, the Local Government Development Minister also said, “The toilet industry is expected to be valued at USD 17.3 billion in 2030 with an annual growth rate of 7.6%. Malaysia is aiming to be the manufacturing hub of smart toilets and we must be the front-runner for public hygiene & cleanliness.”

Congratulations to all the winners of the ‘Toilet of the Year 2023’ award! May they continue to provide the best public restroom services to the public.
