Yesterday (Thursday, 24th October), Malaysians, particularly Pahang netizens, were overjoyed as they celebrated the wedding of Pahang prince Tengku Muhammad and his new bride, Tengku Natasya Adnan. The grand ceremony for the second heir in the line of succession to Pahang’s royal throne took place at Balai Mahkota, Istana Abdulaziz, with many members of the Pahang royal family in attendance.
While there were plenty of memorable moments throughout the day, most people were eager to see the interactions between the newlyweds. However, one playful moment involving the groom’s older brother, Tengku Hassanal, caught netizens’ attention and quickly went viral. Here’s what happened:
The merenjis ceremony, a traditional part of Malay weddings, involves family members blessing the bride and groom by sprinkling rose-scented water and a mixture of dried petals and leaves, known as bunga rampai. This custom was applied during Tengku Muhammad’s wedding, with Crown Prince Tengku Hassanal following the steps after Al-Sultan Abdullah and Tunku Azizah.
In now-viral TikTok videos, Tengku Hassanal who was dressed in a green Baju Melayu, stepped onto the beautifully decorated wedding dais to perform the ritual. However, what made the moment amusing was that, instead of lightly sprinkling the potpourri into the couple’s hands, the Crown Prince playfully smothered a large amount. He continued to play with the dried leaves, trying to neatly arrange them on top of the Royal groom’s hands.
After his adorable antics, Tengku Hassanal proceeded with the next step, sprinkling a normal amount of rose water onto the couple’s hands, now humorously covered in dried leaves. The merenjis ceremony concluded with the newlywed kissing and shaking His Highness’ hand. At the end, Tengku Muhammad was even seen humorously gathering the excess potpourri and placing it beside him on the chair.
This isn’t the first time Tengku Hassanal’s playful personality has gone viral at a sibling’s wedding. He previously made headlines for dancing to the Poco-Poco during his sister Tengku Afzan’s wedding last August. Many netizens commented on how affectionate the Crown Prince’s interaction with his younger brother was during the ceremony.
Some jokingly said that he was trying to “make a burger” with Tengku Muhammad’s hands, while others expressed their excitement and anticipation for the day when it’s Tengku Hassanal’s turn to be the one ending his bachelorhood. Watch the viral videos here:
