“I’m Sorry”: TripleS Kim Yooyeon Apologises Over Group’s Dorm Arrangement

For as long as we can remember, trainees would normally live in dormitories provided by their talent agencies after being selected to possibly debut as a K-pop idol. Groups from every generation have all described the living conditions of having to share such a tight space with 10 to even 20 people and not every story was pretty.

Thankfully, after debuting, many have chosen to move out to bigger apartment units or even purchased their own homes. This rookie girl group decided to do things slightly differently and live in their respective houses when they’re not working but who knew that they’d end up getting backlash for it?

During a recent interview, TripleS (트리플에스) shared their unique dorm arrangements saying that they’d only live together in the dorm when they’re in the middle of promotional activities as it is more convenient. During the non-promotional period, some members decided to go back and live at home since this would be the time when their schedule would not be so packed with activities apart from recording and rehearsals.

While their company MODHAUS had no issues and approved this living arrangement, some fans were surprisingly =unhappy with the revelation. As seen in the screenshots above, many think it was unnecessary for the 24-member rookie girl group to make that information public, while others felt concerned saying that living separately might affect their teamwork and image.

A day after the news broke (Thursday, 13th June), leader Kim Yooyeon (김유연) took to social media to address the backlash. In her statement, she wrote, “I’m so sorry and sad to think that many fans were worried and bothered about what we said yesterday. Firstly, I think we did make a big statement, but anyway, next month I have lots of overseas schedules and I think I’ll be moving back into the dorms within the next two months at most.”

The singer clarified the reason she moved out was due to some family matters and she didn’t think there’d be an issue since her house is near the agency’s building. “I hope you guys don’t think too much of it. Even during non-promotional periods, I’m always with the members from lunch to dinner, going to the company daily and practising, so you don’t have to worry too much,” she added.

After releasing her statement, international fans were furious over how some would criticise the members for something so trivial. Many defended the idol saying the members have every right to live as they please as long as it does not violate their contract with their company.

Other members of TripleS have yet to release their own statement but regardless, it’s truly unfortunate that Kim Yooyeon felt the need to justify her reasons for wanting or needing to stay home. What are your thoughts on this issue?
