Almost a week ago, celebrity chef Datuk Redzuawan Ismail, better known as Chef Wan sparked an outrage across all social media platforms when he made a statement regarding Aishwarya Rai’s ensemble at the Cannes Film Festival. Amidst the building rage, he has decided to release another statement in response to the matter.
Yesterday (28th May 2024), the celebrity chef expressed his sincerest apology in an Instagram post, which now can’t be viewed as his account has been deleted. However, according to sources, the host added that it was never his intention to mock the religion or come across as racist. Chef Wan claimed that he had always been an advocate for ethnic harmony, upholding values of love and respect across cultures.
In his post, the 66-year-old acknowledged his penchant for humour and said that he made such a comment as the Bollywood actress’ dress reminded him of Kavadi, a decorated canopy used during Thaipusam festival. Nevertheless, he agreed that his words were open to interpretation and perhaps have offended people. “This incident has taught me a valuable lesson, that is to tread carefully when it comes to topics of religion and culture” he declared.
The entrepreneur also mentioned that this matter had him shocked upon seeing the reaction of netizens. Chef Wan admitted that he didn’t know whether he is amused or upset to witness how sensitive Malaysians can be towards various topics.

In light of this controversy, authorities have initiated an investigation into Chef Wan’s social media post, prompted by concerns that his comment may disrupt the racial harmony in Malaysia. Sentul Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari confirmed that a police report had been filed against the restaurateur to avoid worsening the issue further.
Despite it all, Chef Wan wished that the society is able to comprehend the real meaning behind his comment and not get offended easily as that was never his intentions. With that being said, incidents like these underscore the need for respectful dialogue and mutual understanding as it is our duty to cultivate a more inclusive society where everyone is heard and valued.
