There’s been plenty of cases of inconsiderate passengers who were caught hogging the seats on the MRT or LRT with their shopping bags and other belongings. There were also stories of passengers who refused to offer the priority seats to those who actually needed them but in this latest incident, was this person wrong for occupying the seat?
A video was posted yesterday (Thursday, 15th February), on the ROADS.sg Facebook page showed two women arguing over a priority seat on the MRT in Singapore and it got netizens divided on who was in the right. Here’s what happened:
Source: Facebook/roadssgThe woman in the striped shirt was seen yelling at a passenger dressed in black, who was occupying one of the priority seats. It seems that the woman wanted to help a senior citizen by asking the seated passenger to give up the seat for the elderly.
Unfortunately, the other woman refused to budge and argued that she had the right to sit down as she was tired from work. “What’s your problem? I asked if you can give up your seat for old people,” the striped-shirt woman said. The other passengers onboard looked visibly uncomfortable during the entire confrontation. Frustrated by the young passenger, the striped-shirt woman threatened to call the police on her.
“You lose the face of Singapore, you know?” she said before disembarking the train at the next stop. The viral clip got netizens arguing in the comments section about who was wrong in this situation. Some defended the black-shirt woman saying she had the right to sit down after a long day while others believed that the priority seats should be given to those who actually need them.
While there was no “winner” to this debate, it is important to remember to always be considerate when taking public transportation and while not compulsory, it is still encouraged to offer the priority seats for those who need them such as the elderly, disabled or pregnant women. Otherwise, you’re basically free to use the seats if no one is occupying them.
