The life of a content creator can be fun, it can also take a huge toll on one’s mental health. A few months ago, Jenn Chia, famously known as @soimjenn on her socials, shared with us how she manages her emotions in a healthier and more sustainable way.
In that same interview, she opened up about her therapy session which made her aware that she has extremely high expectations on people. This had led her to become less compassionate towards herself and others. The public figure decided to share more about that phase during her appearance on an episode of a Singaporean YouTube talk show.
Jenn Chia was the first guest on the first episode of Sonia Chew’s “Sip Back with Sonia” talk show, which was posted on the Clarity YouTube Channel on Thursday (1st February). The two played games, talked about their careers and answered some questions submitted by viewers. At one point during the discussion, the 31-year-old Malaysian influencer opened up about how her job affected her mentally.
“I attached myself to the recognition I was getting as a content creator and because of that, I became egotistical and rigid to a point where I was like ‘my way is the only way; the right way. I didn’t consider other people’s opinions or feedback. I just did what I believed was right,” she told the host. The talented creator only realised her setbacks during the Covid-19 lockdown when she did a lot of self-reflection. After speaking with her therapist, she became aware of her high expectations and low compassion.
She realised that she’d been chasing validation from others as a content creator and that when everything stopped momentarily, she felt lost. “I told my husband’s dad that I was ready to die because I had nothing to look forward to. Looking back at it now, it was so painful, like I was really at my lowest,” she elaborated. Thankfully, things have turned out for the better for the singer. “Now I’m excited to see what I can do next. Waking up feels like an adventure now cause I’ve done something for myself that helped me heal”.
Apart from that, Jenn also opened up about the scariest part of her life her work started to gain more traction. “People started to know who I am but the scary part was that they expect me to act like the characters I portray in my videos. So doing live shows terrified me. I felt like people liked me for my character, not me; so I felt lost, I felt like I was not good enough.” The influencer then shared that she overcame the fear after constantly reminding herself that she was more than her work.
