If you have stepped into The Exchange TRX, you may notice all the brand advertisements displayed throughout the mall. However, one netizen claims that there is one brand you will never find advertised inside the mall.
According to Twitter user @/adibhaslami, South Korean electronics brand Samsung cannot advertise their products inside The Exchange TRX because of the mall’s contract with Apple. The tweet claims that the mall had agreed not to display any advertisement from Apple’s competitors due to the mall housing an Apple Store. However, the tweet added that you can still see Samsung adverts displayed in the Tun Razak Exchange MRT station, especially throughout the path leading towards the mall.
In the same thread, the Twitter user also shared the cost of applying the advertisement throughout the MRT station. According to the tweet, the Samsung billboards have an estimated annual cost of around RM2 million. He also shared that The Tun Razak Exchange MRT station has one of the highest traffic amongst all the MRT stations, which could elude that Samsung isn’t negatively affected by the lack of advertising inside the mall.
Many netizens have reacted to the Twitter thread, with most calling it insightful. Many said they also noticed the lack of Samsung adverts within the mall, adding they now understand why. Some also joked about the move, saying it shows how petty brands can be with their competitors. However, others question if blocking a competitor from advertising is legal as it could be against the Malaysian Competition Act of 2010 that prohibits anti-competitive agreements and abuse of dominant position in the market.
If you’re curious, there still is a Samsung Experience Store inside The Exchange TRX despite the lack of ads. Meanwhile, the long-awaited Apple Store has yet to announce an official opening date – but what do you think about the Twitter user’s claims?
