In life, you will always win some, and lose some. Well, that seems to be the case for both singer-rapper Namewee (黃明志) and local concert organiser StarPlanet (星艺娱乐) who both won and lost a lawsuit respectively against each other.

A few years ago, Namewee and StarPlanet ended up butting heads after they filed lawsuits against each other over the singer’s cancelled 2019 concert. As it turns out, the lawsuits were recently concluded, with each winning one lawsuit, but losing the other.

On 31st January, it was revealed that StarPlanet had won the defamation case against the singer. “Our company is pleased that the court has made a wise decision. Justice has finally been served, and our company and its president Datuk Alan Foo’s name have been cleared,” they said. They added that the court had ordered Namewee to compensate the company and issue a public apology.

“The court’s verdict today proves that Mr. Wee (Namewee)’s accusations against our company and president Datuk Alan Foo on the internet were groundless (as he) wantonly spread rumours and deliberately defamed the company’s reputation,” StarPlanet declared in their statement.

But, while they did win the defamation lawsuit, Namewee won his own lawsuit against them over their breach of contract. The singer himself celebrated the fact via his socials shortly after the verdict was revealed, thanking the judiciary “for giving (them) justice“. “After four years of waiting, it was finally confirmed that StarPlanet and Datuk Alan broke the contract,” he shared on his Facebook.

Namewee admitted to losing the defamation lawsuit, but claimed he didn’t mind having to compensate them nor publicly apologise. “I will do these things, and I will find the money,” he alleged. “But, the most important thing is that if I can make these people’s breach of contract known to the public, then I will have a clear conscience.”

On the other hand, StarPlanet claimed that the company had carefully considered all aspects, including Namewee’s personal behaviour, before deciding to suspend the contract. “The company emphasizes that this decision was only based on the situation’s development at the time, and is not targeting anyone,” they stated.

StarPlanet also stated that they respect the court’s judgement on the lawsuit regarding their breach of contract. However, it seems they are not quite willing to let this one go. The company shared that they will consult a lawyer before deciding to appeal the lawsuit.

Well, it seems that messy affair has mostly come to a conclusion, with both Namewee and StarPlanet winning their lawsuits respectively. We shall have to wait and see if the concert organiser will appeal the breach of contract lawsuit, but for now, we congratulate both parties on winning their lawsuits.
