Coffee culture in Malaysia is growing as we speak, and along with it comes all the new cafes. However, despite being beautifully decorated, some cafes don’t seem to last very long – but why? Hoping for some answers, Twitter account @/localrkyt asked netizens: “Why are so many cafes closing down, even after getting decorated beautifully?”
The tweet garnered tons of responses from netizens, sharing what they believe to be the cause of an unsuccessful cafe. Many of the answers pointed to one aspect – taste. According to netizens, many of these cafes rely on their food and drinks being “Instagram-worthy” but forget that the taste is just as important. Netizens also lamented that cafes should at least serve delicious coffee, even if the food isn’t up to par. They also said that local cafes that offer Western meals don’t get them right, especially when it comes to the ingredients or recipes.
Netizens also blamed the prices of these cafes, saying they’re too expensive to be worth the trip. Speaking of expensive food, many expressed that the overpriced food and beverages don’t make sense because the customers are often young and can’t afford to pay over RM20 for coffee. However, some said they would be willing to pay more if the quality of the menu is worth the cost, even if it’s not big portion-wise.
Apart from food quality, another reason behind a cafe’s failure would be the lack of marketing and business strategy. Many have said that cafes rely too much on the probability of going viral on social media that they fail to understand the basics of running a food establishment. Some comments also pointed out that many of these failed cafes have bad, or even slow, customer service.
What do you think about these reasons? Do you agree or disagree with netizens?
