There have been several cases of customers complaining about how expensive their order was. Netizens were shocked to learn how 2 plates of chicken rice at a local restaurant cost about RM81.
If that wasn’t surprising enough, this customer found out that their total bill for a family seafood meal was over RM1000! Here’s the story:
Earlier this week, a netizen who goes by Ekin Cahaya posted a video and a photo of a foodcourt in Johor Bahru along with a receipt of the meal her family ordered. What shocked her the most was the total cost of the seafood meal which was RM1,260! Flabbergasted by the bill, in her caption, the customer wrote, “Those who are local here, is the food at Medan Selera Tepian Tebrau really this expensive? Has anyone faced something similar?”
In the video, the perplexed woman zoomed in on the menu on the wall to show that the prices for each dish were never actually specified. Only the words, “Prices according to Market Price” were written on the menu. However, the photo of the bill showed that the prices for the seafood dishes range from RM30 to RM224. Suspicious of the stall, Ekin tagged the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KDPN), hoping that they’d investigate the matter.
The post went viral with netizens being as shocked as the customer. Some shared similar experiences claiming that the restaurant there is very expensive while others were wondering if the customer properly checked the price of the food before ordering.
Luckily for Ekin, KDPN caught wind of the viral post and went to investigate the establishment. According to The Star, the stall at the food court is suspected to be in violation if the prices displayed are different from what was charged. “If prices are too expensive – even if the prices are displayed – then we will issue a notice under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011,” said director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo.
If the owners are found guilty, they will be fined up to RM100,000, or given a maximum three-year jail term, or both. Guess we’ll see how this case will turn out.
Update (5th October):
A woman claiming to be the owner of the establishment has come forward to explain the situation via her son’s TikTok. She claimed the group allegedly consisting of 20 people had ordered a total of ten dishes with ingredients such as stingray, shrimp, crab and squid. The lady added she is willing to meet with the customer to explain her charges. The original post was unable to be found at the time of writing.
