It’s a common sight to see tourists out and about in Kuala Lumpur or any popular hotspots in Malaysia. One might say that locals enjoy watching foreigners appreciating everything this country has to offer.
However, this foreigner felt like she was no longer in Malaysia after she noticed just how many tourists she saw compared to locals during her day out in the city.
@elvirademchaa Im sorry, but for the past 6 years of living in Malaysia, I’ve never seen so many tourists… says me 😅 #bukitbintang #malaysia
Slavic content creator Elvira Demcha posted a video on her TikTok channel of her day out in Bukit Bintang, KL. However, the video showed mostly foreign tourists roaming around the city compared to locals, much to the TikToker’s surprise. “Am I even in Malaysia?” she wrote in the video.
The influencer also added in the post’s caption that she hasn’t seen this many tourists over the past 6 years she’s been living in the country. The video then became her most-viewed video this year with over 1.6 million views and also sparked discussions among Malaysian netizens.
Many replied to her post as well as to a reposted video on Instagram yesterday (8th August) to share their opinions on the influx of tourists in the country. Those on TikTok agree that they see mainly tourists around the main cities or popular areas in Malaysia compared to locals while those on Instagram argued that they are still many places in the country where one would see mostly locals than foreigners.
Some also commented that the increase in tourists, especially in the city, isn’t necessarily a bad thing and that it’s good for the economy. One even poked fun at a certain comedian by pointing out how much tourist loves coming to Malaysia. At the time of writing, Elvira hasn’t posted a follow-up post nor has she given more opinions on the topic.
What do you think? Does Malaysia, or more specifically KL, feel like a foreign country cause of the increase in tourists?
