While having a signature scent will always be in style, the fragrance market has been evolving. Unlike makeup or beauty trends, there hasn’t been a lot of huge changes going on in the perfume industry – but when there is, it’s a big deal. “After the pandemic, the fragrance category shifted towards realness and originality, with a focus on creating scents that bring joy and happiness, revive the senses, and boost confidence,” Azzi Glasser, an award-winning perfume designer, told Cosmopolitan.
Without further ado, here are the biggest perfume trends of 2023:
Unisex Fragrances
Fragrances, like makeup and beauty products, have been categorised as either “feminine” or “masculine with no room for flexibility. Whatever happened to creativity and gender fluidity? However, until recently, the lines have blurred, and more and more genderless scents have been popping up. This can be seen in the packaging, where brands are sticking to minimalistic containers, as well as in the marketing of the perfumes. The gender-neutral fragrance trend combines a mixture of aromatic solvents (especially woody notes), a combination that appeals to both sexes.
Eco-Friendly Formulas & Packaging
The ‘sustainable beauty’ trend isn’t going away any time soon, and it has made its way to the perfume industry too. Nowadays, consumers are looking at brands with a strong focus on sustainability, whether it’s how they source their packaging or their materials. So it’s no surprise that more brands are working on being transparent about their products, from ingredient-sourcing, using refillable bottles, down to how the fragrances are made.
Fragrance Layering
Rather than sticking to one signature scent, in 2023, everyone seems to be all about layering perfumes. Fragrance layering is basically combining several fragrant products and creating your own personal scent. It’s a way for perfume wearers to create something unique, and it allows them to whip up their own blends whenever the mood suits them. While it could be tricky when it comes to finding which scents go well together, a bit of experimentation is all you need for a fun surprise.
Modern Floral Perfumes
Floral fragrances have been around for a long time, but they’re having a fresh new take in 2023. Expect to see unexpected twists to floral notes like tuberose, rose and gardenia. Unique combinations such as damask rose with cassis and matcha, iris paired with fig, and tuberose alongside pepper and suede, take florals from feeling like something your grandma would wear to something fresh and modern.
Dupe Perfumes
Dupes are in, according to TikTok anyways. Look, dupes will never, ever replace the OG scent, but they’re pretty damn close, and as long as you smell good by the end of the day, who cares? The reality is, dupes will continue to be strong, and they’ll be around for a long time. Not to mention how mainstream the marketing has gotten for the dupe fragrances. Brands like Dossier and Zara have been recreating famous scents at a more affordable price point, making them a favourite among younger audiences.
Fruity Fragrances
Fruity fragrances get a lot of bad rep for being childish and even nauseating for some. However, these days, fruity scents have gotten a glow up, with fragrances that feel more mature and something you could actually wear to a night out without smelling like you just walked out of the kid’s perfume section. Expect to see light florals paired with tangy citruses that create a sophisticated smell. Think: lime, orange, and bergamot!
