Last week, an unconventional robbery caused quite a stir. Three robbers blew open an automated teller machine (ATM) at the Ambank branch in Setia Alam, Selangor. They managed to escape with over RM300,000, leaving many flabbergasted.

However, it seems their cleverness might have backfired on them. As it turns out, the explosion not only cracked open the ATM, it also left them ink-stained. So, instead of spending their ill-gotten gains, the trio were busy washing the money they stole! The police have since managed to successfully catch all three perpetrators.

Yesterday (2nd March), the police revealed they had managed to nab the culprits in three separate raids. The suspects were arrested around Kuang, Gombak and Meru. As it turns out, two of the suspects arrested were mechanics.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan added they had found the suspects washing the ink-stained money using bleach. Apparently, the money had gotten sprayed with ink from the ATM during the explosion. However, the group was allegedly an old hat at this. According to the police, the trio had also had a hand in two other ATM explosion cases, both involving the same bank during December 2020 and February 2022.

“The suspects choose ATMs from the same banks because the machines operate using an old system which can be blown up with gas which is commonly used for welding,” Hussein reportedly explained. The heist had allegedly been masterminded by a 43-year-old mechanic. Cable rolls, signal jammers and cash worth RM202,4000 were also seized in the raids.

Police have allegedly discovered that all three suspects are drug addicts and have past records relating to crime and drugs. Currently, they are continuing to investigate under Section 436/379 of the Penal Code. The suspects will also be remanded until 7th March.

Netizens have since been congratulating the police on their success. Several have also taken to mocking the robbers for their blunder. Regardless, we’re certainly happy the robbers got caught!
