Back in August, Jovian Mandagie launched his new line of shapewear aptly called the Wonder Suit. Interestingly, the local designer also managed to snap up some of Malaysia’s most prominent stars for his latest campaign. Among the list of celebs include singer-actress Ifa Raziah, Ning Baizura, and also girl group Dolla.
However, it appears that some people didn’t react too kindly to the company’s marketing campaign. Taking to Twitter, a non-governmental Organisation (NGO) called Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (ISMA) stated that they have recently submitted a letter of protest to the Jovian Factory Outlet in Seksyen 9, Bandar Baru Bangi, calling for the company to immediately remove the billboard featuring the female celebs posing in the corset.
In their tweet, the organisation also listed down three reasons as to why the campaign billboard should be taken down. “First, the billboard is seen as degrading the dignity of women. The image of female’s undergarment should not be displayed in public. Second, we object because the billboard (apparently) promotes soft pornography. The billboard ad appears to show the eight women in bikinis (due to the product’s nude colour).”
They added, “The third reason is because it violates public decency. This advertisement is opposed to the image of Bandar Bangi Bangi as ‘Bandar Berilmu’ (knowledgeable city) as well as ‘Syurga Tudung’ (shopping paradise for hijabis). Furthermore, this ad is situated near the iconic mosque, Al-Hasanah Mosque and Sungai Ramal ADUN, YB Mazwan Johar’s office.”
“Based on a brief survey we conducted on the Bandar Baru Bangi Community (BBBC) Facebook group, we received more than 300 responses from netizens who also expressed their disapproval towards the billboard ad,” ISMA added in their statement.
So far, Jovian has yet to issue his response to the NGO’s appeal.
