There have been times when netizens or even fans suspect some celebrity couples are faking their romantic relationships for the sake of publicity, especially if those celebrities have worked together on a project. Remember when some people thought singers Shawn Mendes and Camila Callebo were faking their relationship in order to promote their 2019 hit duet “Señorita”?
American DJ and producer Diplo even once claimed that Zedd and Selena Gomez faked their relationship to boost album sales and Selena later addressed those claims herself. It does make us wonder if Malaysian celebs have done such a thing to increase their popularity. Singer Sissy Imann may have some insights on that matter.
Malaysian singer and actress Sissy Imann recently revealed that she was once proposed to by an acquaintance in the entertainment industry to be in a fake romantic relationship together for the sake of publicity. Without naming the acquaintance, the singer told Kosmo that she turned down the offer saying that she’d rather be not popular than chase cheap publicity.
According to the 26-year-old, the person who proposed the idea to her believed she was lacking popularity due to never having any sensational stories or gossip about her life. “I know gossip about celebrities being in love is one of the hot topics that attract attention, but of course, I am not willing to make up stories that are not true,” she said.
The “Bebas” songstress also told Kosmo that the less gossip, the better, and that she’d rather work sincerely and honestly than spread lies. “Not only would I be lying to people, but I’d also be lying to myself,” she added. There is currently no info nor speculation on who the acquaintance she was referring to is, although it’s not surprising how some celebs would be willing to do anything for publicity.
If certain Malaysian celebs are willing to allegedly lie about their expensive purchase to flaunt their wealth, or pretend to be scammed for the sake of marketing, it wouldn’t be too much of a shock if there was a celebrity couple out there faking their relationship for publicity.
