Embrace the “grapeness” as the harvest season from Australia is here again and Taste Australia is ready to celebrate another year and season of their tasty and juicy table grapes with the rest of the world.
Grapes are actually a popular snack in Malaysia, and these eye-catching brightly coloured superfoods are the perfect anytime snack, providing a much-needed antioxidant boost.
“With the “Embracing Grapeness” campaign, we wanted to highlight the wide range, freshness, and quality of our Australian table grapes. The warm sunny days and cool nights result in high-colour, sweeter and tastier grapes that are available from November through to May, with the peak export period extended from January to May,” said Brei Montgomery, Hort Innovation Head of Trade.
Table grapes from Australia are categorised into seeded and seedless varieties which are either red, black, or green in colour. Thompson Seedless, Menindee Seedless, Crimson Seedless, and Red Globe are the four most popular varieties.
There is also a growing number of innovative varieties developed by commercial breeders such as Adora, Cotton Candy, Golden Globe, Sweet Sapphire, Alison & Midnight Beauty. Not only are these grapes colourful and sweet, they have so many health benefits like protecting healthy retinal cells, being a good source of vitamin C and Vitamin B6 and keeping your gut healthy.
Melanie Harris, Malaysia and Brunei’s Trade and Investment Commissioner, stated that Australian table grapes have the highest fresh fruit horticulture export, with grapes being exported to 42 nations worldwide.
“Over the years, our exports to Malaysia have remained steady, with last year witnessing an increase by 28%. This value continues to grow, hence we look forward to supplying more to the Malaysian market in the months to come,” she said.
Chef Annette of TCH Foodworks spoke about pairing food with table grapes at the launch event where she said, “Grapes are so versatile and pairs well with a large variety of specialty cheeses such as brie, blue cheese, ricotta as well as nuts. You can even cut them in half, freeze, and use them instead of ice as a natural way to chill and sweeten drinks.”
