If you’ve watched Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling’s previous films – “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and “Gangster Squad” – you’d know that they have crazy good chemistry onscreen.
Add singing, dancing, and music into the equation and their chemistry is bound to take their romance to the next level in their upcoming musical film, “La La Land”. Case in point: their duet song called “City of Stars”, and it sounds exactly as the title suggests – jazzy and romantic.
As you may know, “La La Land” centres on Mia and Sebastian, both struggling to find fame in Los Angeles. Instead, they find each other. Aw… Just when we thought we couldn’t be any more excited from watching the dreamy trailer, the first full length song was released this week.
“City of Stars” is no doubt a good first track to promote since the melody doesn’t rely on show-stopping choreography. There are already talks that “La La Land” is currently the frontrunner for next year’s Academy Award Best Picture, so a Best Song nomination is almost a guarantee.
“I was just composing it from an emotional place and thinking about the tone I would say the tone is hopeful, but melancholy at the same time. And it kind of goes back-and-forth between cadencing in major and cadencing in minor, because I think that’s kind of what the song is about. You have these great moments and then you have these less great moments in life and in Los Angeles and we see it happen in the story,” said music composer Justin Hurwitz.
We had no idea that Stone and Gosling could even sing. Both stars sound excellent here. Now that we’ve listen to “City of Stars”, we’re craving for the movie soundtrack even more. Get ready to fall in love with the duo’s voices when you listen to the lovely song below.

Slated for release on 16th December 2016, “La La Land” also stars J. K. Simmons, Finn Wittrock, Callie Hernandez, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Meagen Fay.
